If your customer says one of these things, there is a significant chance that they will refuse a small offer, and you should close the sale:

I absolutely can't buy anything else
OK I have to go
It will be tough to even fit all that in the car
That's all I can afford
I really can't spend any more
Wow that's a lot. I should be going
If I put that on the emergency card it will just fit

If your customer says one of these things, there is a significant chance that they will reject a medium offer, and you should make a small offer:

I'm going to be broke after this
This is more than I've spent in a long time
I'm definitely over budget now
Guess I won't be able to eat out for a while
I hope I have enough to pay for all of that

If your customer says one of these things, there is a significant chance that they will not accept a large offer, so don't make a large offer:

I can't wait to get that home
Great, thanks for your help
Looks good. I'd liked to paid with my Visa
This was more than I planned on spending
I'll be paying this off for a while
Well, there goes this month's budget
There goes my paycheck
I'm satisfied. Do you want to ring me up?
I shouldn't, but sometimes you just have to splurge
That's a little more than I wanted to spend, but I think it's worth the cost
That's about what I came for
Even on sale that's still pretty expensive
Good thing I have a big credit limit
I'll have to tighten my belt a bit after this.
I'll be very happy with that.

If your customer says something enthusiastic that wasn't on any of those lists, they will probably accept an offer of any size.

If they say "If I put that on the emergency card it will just fit," the probability that they will reject a small offer seems to be less than 50%. However, I don't think it's ever worth that risk since you stand to lose 2400 or more if they refuse and only 300 if they accept, so I put it on the "close the sale" list.

I usually make a profit of about 600 per customer on average. Sometimes I make as little as 150 or just break even, sometimes I make 1050 or more. Sometimes I lose 300-600 on a stingy customer, but I never lose a customer if I follow these rules.

My personal record profit for a customer is 1650!

You don't lose 300-600 you lose 3300-3600.

Stingy customer: A customer who says something like "I absolutely can't buy anything else" when you have earned less than 3000 in commission. I've never seen anyone say that below 2400, so the most you can lose on a customer if you are careful is 600 βucks.

Nice work!

It's better to be safe than risk turning a customer away. Even if you close the sale for 2700 or 3000, it's a tiny loss. If you send them away, it will take many proper sales to make that much up.

My rule of thumb was open big. If they are enthusiastic, sell something big. If they hint at paying or being finished, go medium. If they start using frequently exaggerated phrases "well I'm over budget now" then switch to small. And push small until they put their foot down or mention a real problem like literally not having enough money or space.

But that's just my quick guideline. Your line-by-line breakdown is excellent.

My best is also a 4650 sale I think, but only once. My worst with this method was 2700, so it is either impossible or incredibly unlucky to end up worse than that.

I thought you meant that they left. Sorry for the misunderstanding

Sometimes, after I make the first sale, the person will say, "I'll be very happy with that." 95% of the time, they will accept another big offer after that. However, once I had them leave when I tried to make a big offer after that. So I would add that to the "don't make a large offer" list.

WOW i got this sale:

Living on the edge!

That may be a once in a lifetime sale. Let's hope you don't scare your next customer away trying to repeat it.
β 5250 has been added to your company's account.

No kidding! I've never come close to that.

Actually I bet optimal strategy makes that impossible, you probably took some risks to do it. But I'm impressed.
